Places You Will Visit on This 5 Days Tanzania Safari
Arusha City – Gateway to Northern Tanzania Safari
Arusha City is the main starting point for many northern Tanzania safaris. The city is located near Mount Meru and gives easy access to Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, and other famous safari destinations.
Most travelers spend a night in Arusha before the safari starts. This makes the journey easier and gives you time to relax, prepare, and meet your safari team before the adventure begins.
Lake Manyara National Park – Forest, Lake and Tree-Climbing Lions
Lake Manyara National Park is one of Tanzania’s most scenic wildlife destinations. The park is famous for its groundwater forest, large baboon population, elephants, hippos, birdlife, and occasional tree-climbing lions.
During your game drive, you may see elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, hippos, monkeys, flamingos, and many bird species. The park offers a unique safari experience within a compact but wildlife-rich environment.
Lake Manyara is a great place to begin your safari because it offers beautiful scenery, diverse habitats, and excellent wildlife viewing within a short distance from Arusha.
Serengeti National Park – Tanzania’s Endless Plains
Serengeti National Park is Tanzania’s most famous safari destination and one of the best wildlife parks in Africa. The park is known for its endless plains, big cats, large animal herds, and the Great Wildebeest Migration.
During your game drives in Serengeti, you may see lions resting on the plains, cheetahs hunting in open grassland, leopards hiding in trees, elephants moving through the bush, and large herds of zebras, wildebeest, gazelles, and buffaloes.
Spending two nights inside Serengeti allows you to explore more wildlife areas and enjoy one of Africa's greatest safari experiences.
Ngorongoro Highlands – Scenic Overnight Before the Crater
The Ngorongoro Highlands are located between Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater. The area is known for cool weather, green hills, farms, forests, Maasai villages, and beautiful views.
Spending a night near/within the Ngorongoro Highlands gives you a good location for an early morning descent into the crater. It also adds a peaceful and scenic experience to your Tanzania safari.
Ngorongoro Crater – Tanzania’s Natural Wildlife Wonder
Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most famous wildlife destinations in Tanzania. It was formed millions of years ago after a large volcano collapsed, creating a huge natural caldera filled with animals.
The crater floor has grassland, forest, swamp, lake areas, and open plains. This makes it home to many animals throughout the year, including lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas, gazelles, and the rare black rhino.
Because many animals live inside the crater, Ngorongoro gives visitors one of the best chances to see a lot of wildlife in a short time.

Frequently Asked Questions About This 5-Day Tanzania Safari
Planning a 5-day group joining safari to Lake Manyara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro? Find answers to common questions about the itinerary, accommodation, wildlife, meals, group size, travel arrangements, the Great Migration, what to pack and how to book your Tanzania safari with Macpace Tours & Safaris.
This 5-day group joining Tanzania safari is designed to cover three of Northern Tanzania's most popular wildlife destinations: Lake Manyara National Park, Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater. The package generally includes safari transportation in a suitable 4x4 safari vehicle, professional safari guide services, accommodation according to the selected package, meals as specified in the itinerary, game drives and applicable national park or conservation fees included in the agreed safari package.
Because inclusions can vary depending on the final accommodation and booking arrangement, travelers should always check the final safari quotation and booking confirmation for the exact list of included and excluded services.
A group joining safari in Tanzania is a shared safari experience where individual travelers or small parties travel together in the same safari vehicle and share the cost of transportation, guiding and selected safari services. It is an excellent option for travelers who want to experience Tanzania's national parks at a more affordable price than a private safari.
Group joining safaris are particularly popular with solo travelers, couples and budget-conscious visitors who enjoy meeting other travelers. Since the safari is shared, daily activities and departure arrangements follow the agreed group itinerary rather than being completely customized for one traveler.
The number of travelers in a group joining safari vehicle can vary depending on the confirmed bookings, vehicle capacity and travel dates. Macpace Tours & Safaris uses appropriate safari vehicles designed for wildlife viewing and long-distance travel in Northern Tanzania.
The final group size should be confirmed with the safari operator before booking, especially if vehicle occupancy or personal space is an important consideration for your trip. Group sizes may also change between different departure dates.
Yes, solo travelers can choose a group joining safari when a suitable departure and available space are confirmed. This makes the itinerary an attractive option for people traveling alone who want to explore Tanzania's famous national parks without paying the full cost of a private safari vehicle.
A group joining safari also gives solo travelers an opportunity to meet other visitors while enjoying game drives in Lake Manyara, Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
This 5-day Tanzania safari focuses on three major Northern Tanzania destinations: Lake Manyara National Park, Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater. Each destination offers a different landscape and wildlife experience.
Lake Manyara is known for its varied habitats, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, birdlife and Rift Valley scenery. Serengeti is famous for its vast plains and exceptional wildlife viewing, including lions, cheetahs and wildebeest. The Ngorongoro Crater provides a unique opportunity to explore a spectacular volcanic caldera with a high concentration of wildlife.
Yes. One of the major advantages of this 5-day itinerary is that it provides an extended Serengeti experience, with the itinerary planned around two nights in or around the Serengeti area depending on the confirmed accommodation arrangement.
Spending more time around Serengeti allows travelers to experience different areas of the park and increases the opportunity for wildlife encounters compared with an itinerary that only passes through the Serengeti for a short visit.
This safari provides opportunities to see a wide range of African wildlife. Depending on the season, location and natural wildlife movements, travelers may encounter lions, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas, antelopes, baboons, warthogs and many different bird species.
Serengeti is particularly well known for predators such as lions, cheetahs and leopards, while the Ngorongoro Crater is famous for its dense concentration of wildlife. Lake Manyara adds a different experience with its forest, woodland, lake and Rift Valley habitats. Wildlife sightings are natural encounters and therefore cannot be guaranteed.
This 5-day Tanzania safari gives travelers opportunities to look for the African Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros. Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater are especially important wildlife areas for Big Five viewing.
However, wildlife is free-ranging and sightings can never be guaranteed. Your chances depend on the season, weather, animal movements, time spent in each area and the locations explored during the game drives. Your experienced safari guide will use local knowledge to help maximize wildlife-viewing opportunities.
Tanzania can be visited throughout the year, and the best travel period depends on what you want to experience. The dry season is generally popular for wildlife viewing because animals can be easier to spot around available water sources and roads are often more accessible.
The green season can also be rewarding, offering beautiful landscapes, fewer visitors in some areas, excellent photographic conditions and abundant birdlife. If your main goal is to see the Great Wildebeest Migration, your travel dates should be planned according to the seasonal movement of the herds rather than assuming that the migration is always in one specific part of Serengeti.
You may have an opportunity to see migration-related wildlife activity during this safari if your travel dates coincide with the movement of the wildebeest herds through the Serengeti ecosystem. The Great Wildebeest Migration is a year-round natural movement, and the location of the herds changes throughout the seasons.
For this reason, seeing the migration cannot be guaranteed simply because you are visiting Serengeti. If witnessing a particular stage of the migration is your main goal, it is important to choose travel dates and safari areas based on the expected seasonal herd movements.
Accommodation for this safari is arranged according to the selected package and availability on your travel dates. Depending on the itinerary, overnight stays may be arranged in the Lake Manyara or Karatu area, Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Highlands or surrounding areas.
The exact accommodation should be confirmed in your final safari quotation or booking confirmation. If a listed property is unavailable, a similar-standard accommodation may be provided depending on availability, season and operational arrangements.
Meals are provided according to the meal plan stated in your safari package and final booking confirmation. Depending on the itinerary, travelers may receive breakfast, lunch and dinner during the safari, with lunch sometimes provided as a packed lunch during full-day game drives.
Travelers with specific dietary requirements, food allergies or special meal preferences should inform Macpace Tours & Safaris before the safari so that appropriate arrangements can be discussed with the accommodation providers.
Airport transfers can be arranged for travelers arriving in or departing from the Arusha or Kilimanjaro area, depending on the package and booking arrangements. Whether airport pickup and drop-off are included in your safari price should be confirmed in the final quotation.
If you are arriving before the safari or departing after it, Macpace Tours & Safaris can help coordinate the transfer arrangements so your arrival, accommodation and safari departure connect smoothly.
This Northern Tanzania safari is generally arranged around the Arusha area, which is one of the main gateways to the country's northern safari circuit. Depending on your travel plans, pickup arrangements can be discussed for travelers staying in Arusha, nearby areas or arriving through Kilimanjaro International Airport.
The exact pickup location and final drop-off point should be confirmed when booking because arrangements can vary according to the traveler's accommodation, arrival details and the confirmed group departure.
Arusha is a common starting point for Northern Tanzania safari routes, and travelers staying in Arusha can usually arrange pickup according to the confirmed departure. Travelers staying in Moshi may also be able to arrange a transfer to the safari meeting point depending on the departure schedule and package terms.
If you are staying in Moshi, Kilimanjaro or another nearby location, provide your accommodation details when requesting a quotation so the safari team can confirm the most suitable pickup or transfer arrangement.
For a 5-day Tanzania safari, pack comfortable and practical clothing suitable for changing temperatures and outdoor activities. Recommended items include lightweight clothing, comfortable trousers, a warm layer for cool mornings and evenings, comfortable closed shoes, a hat or cap, sunglasses and sunscreen.
You may also want to bring binoculars, a camera, spare batteries or a power bank, insect repellent, personal toiletries, any required personal medication, travel documents and a reusable water bottle. Keeping luggage reasonably compact is helpful because space in a shared safari vehicle is limited.
Yes. This 5-day Tanzania safari is a strong option for first-time safari travelers because it combines three major Northern Tanzania destinations in one itinerary. Travelers can experience Lake Manyara, the extensive Serengeti ecosystem and the wildlife-rich Ngorongoro Crater without having to plan separate trips to each destination.
A group joining safari can also be a practical choice for first-time visitors because transportation, game drives, accommodation arrangements and safari guidance are organized as part of the trip.
The main difference is how the safari vehicle and itinerary are shared. On a group joining safari, you travel with other guests and share the safari vehicle and selected services. This generally makes the safari more affordable and is particularly suitable for solo travelers and budget-conscious visitors.
A private Tanzania safari gives your travel party a private vehicle and greater flexibility over the itinerary, timing and pace of the game drives. Private safaris are often preferred by families, couples, photographers or travelers who want a more personalized experience.
Applicable national park and conservation fees may be included depending on the safari package and the final quotation. These can include fees associated with destinations such as Lake Manyara National Park, Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
Because safari prices and inclusions can vary according to accommodation, travel dates and package arrangements, travelers should review the detailed inclusions and exclusions provided with their quotation before making the final booking.
To book this 5-day group joining Tanzania safari, start by providing your preferred travel dates, number of travelers, arrival information and accommodation preferences. Macpace Tours & Safaris can then check availability and provide the appropriate safari quotation and booking details.
Once the itinerary, accommodation and arrangements are confirmed, you can proceed with the required booking process. If you are unsure whether a group joining safari or private Tanzania safari is best for you, share your travel plans with the safari team so the most suitable option can be recommended.

Your journey begins with Lake Manyara National Park, where you can experience a mixture of forest, woodland, open areas and lake scenery. The park provides opportunities to see elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, baboons, hippos and a wide variety of birdlife depending on the season.
Explore the Endless Serengeti Plains
Serengeti is the main wildlife highlight of the itinerary. Its vast plains and varied habitats support large populations of herbivores and predators. During game drives, you may have opportunities to look for lions, cheetahs, elephants, zebras, wildebeest, giraffes, hyenas and other wildlife.
Enjoy More Time for Wildlife Discovery
Spending more than one night around the Serengeti area gives you more time to explore and look for wildlife. Your exact game-drive experience will depend on the season, animal movements, road conditions and the areas visited by your safari guide.
Travel Through Tanzania's Dramatic Highland Landscapes
As the safari continues toward Ngorongoro, the landscape changes from the open Serengeti plains to the highlands surrounding the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The changing scenery is an important part of the journey and provides excellent opportunities for landscape photography.
Experience One of Tanzania's Most Famous Wildlife Areas
The Ngorongoro Crater provides a unique wildlife-viewing environment inside a large volcanic caldera. A crater game drive gives travelers opportunities to look for lions, buffaloes, zebras, hippos, hyenas, elephants and other wildlife while enjoying spectacular natural scenery.
What Does a Typical Safari Day Look Like?
Safari schedules can vary according to the itinerary, park regulations, wildlife movements and group arrangements, but a typical day may include early starts, game drives, meals, scenic travel and time at your lodge or camp.

Some game drives begin early when temperatures are cooler and wildlife may be active. Your guide will advise you about the day's departure time.

Check AvailabilityBest Time to Visit for This 5-Day Tanzania Safari
Tanzania is a year-round safari destination, but the best time to visit Lake Manyara, Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater depends on your priorities. Wildlife viewing, weather, seasonal landscapes, visitor numbers and the Great Migration can all influence the ideal time for your 5-day Tanzania safari.
Dry Season
The dry season is widely considered one of the most popular periods for a Tanzania safari. Vegetation is generally less dense and animals may be easier to spot around available water sources.
- Excellent general wildlife viewing
- Generally drier safari conditions
- Comfortable conditions for game drives
- Popular period for Serengeti safaris
Short Rains & Green Landscapes
The short-rain period can bring greener landscapes and fewer visitors in some areas. Rainfall patterns vary, and showers do not necessarily prevent safari activities.
- Fresh green scenery
- Good photographic conditions
- Potentially fewer visitors
- Wildlife remains present year-round
Green Season & Calving Period
January and February can be particularly interesting in the Serengeti ecosystem, especially for travelers interested in the seasonal wildebeest calving period. Exact wildlife locations depend on seasonal conditions.
- Green and scenic landscapes
- Excellent wildlife opportunities
- Wildebeest calving season in the ecosystem
- Good period for nature photography
Long Rains & Lush Scenery
The long-rain period generally brings lush vegetation and fewer visitors compared with peak travel periods. Rainfall can be heavier, particularly during parts of the season, so travelers should plan with flexible expectations.
- Lush green landscapes
- Fewer visitors in some areas
- Excellent scenery for photography
- Wildlife viewing remains possible
Tanzania Safari Seasons at a Glance
Use this simple guide to understand what each part of the year can offer on a Northern Tanzania safari.
Can You See the Great Migration on This Safari?
Yes, the Serengeti is part of the Great Migration ecosystem, but the migration is a natural seasonal movement rather than a fixed event that stays in one location throughout the year. The location of large herds changes according to rainfall, food availability and animal movements.
If seeing the migration is your main priority, tell us your travel dates before booking so the itinerary can be reviewed according to the expected seasonal wildlife movements.
What Is the Weather Like During a Tanzania Safari?
Northern Tanzania experiences different temperatures and weather conditions depending on altitude, season and location. The Ngorongoro Highlands can feel considerably cooler than lower-altitude safari areas, particularly during early mornings and evenings.
Lake Manyara
Expect changing conditions between warm daytime temperatures and cooler periods, with seasonal rainfall influencing the landscape.
Serengeti
Days can be warm while early mornings and evenings may feel cooler. Seasonal rainfall affects vegetation and wildlife distribution.
Ngorongoro
Because of its high elevation, the Ngorongoro area can be cool, especially early in the morning and after sunset.
So, When Is the Best Time to Go?
There is no single best month for every traveler. For classic dry-season wildlife viewing, June to October is a popular choice. Travelers who prefer greener scenery, seasonal wildlife experiences or potentially fewer visitors may also find the other seasons rewarding.
The best travel period ultimately depends on your wildlife interests, budget, preferred weather conditions and travel dates.
